A Visitor’s Guide to the Port Lavaca Lighthouse & Beach

A quick half-hour's drive from charming Palacios lies Port Lavaca, TX — home of the historic Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse and beautiful Lighthouse Beach.

Whether you're a history fan, a beach lover, or an avid birdwatcher, you’ll find plenty to do at this popular beach and lighthouse in Port Lavaca. Here's the ultimate visitor's guide for an unforgettable trip to the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse and Lighthouse Beach on Matagorda Bay.

Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse History

Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse is more than a historic gem in Port Lavaca — it's a solid piece of Texas history. Originally built in 1858 on the southern tip of Halfmoon Reef, this unique screw-pile lighthouse once guided ships with its distinctive red beam created by a red glass chimney. This color was purposefully chosen to distinguish it from the fixed white light from the nearby Matagorda Island Lighthouse.

Despite weathering many storms and even going dark during the Civil War, the structure has stood the test of time. Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse suffered little damage from the hurricanes in the 1800s that destroyed nearby towns and lighthouses. Today, beautifully restored and standing proudly beside the Bauer Community Center, this Texas historical marker welcomes visitors to explore its rich history and snap pictures on its massive porch.

Information to Visit Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse

A black-and-white photograph of the Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse, a small, octagonal structure with a cupola housing the light at the top. The lighthouse is made of wood, with a wrap-around deck supported by stilts. The roof is slightly sloped, and the structure has a quaint, historic charm. Three flags are visible to the right of the lighthouse, including the American flag.

Currently, there are no tours of Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse or other ways to view the interior. However, you can take unique photos and videos from the outside on the porch.

Lighthouse Beach

A bright and sunny day at a busy marina, with several boats docked along the piers.

Lighthouse Beach in Port Lavaca, Texas, offers more than a beautiful shoreline (but it has that, too!). This beach has all the amenities you need for a comfortable and enjoyable visit, including a splash pad, playground, fishing pier, and boat ramp. Lighthouse Beach is also home to the Formosa Wetlands Walkway and Alcoa Bird Tower — a few of the best stops on the Calhoun Loop for birdwatching.

Families can relax on the sandy beach, share a meal at the picnic area, catch a big one from the fishing pier or on a fishing charter, or let the kids enjoy the playground and splash pad.

Formosa Wetlands Walkway and the Alcoa Bird Tower

A wooden boardwalk stretches out over a marshy area, leading to a covered observation tower with a pyramid-shaped roof. The structure overlooks a wide expanse of water, with the grassy marshlands in the foreground.

Located at Lighthouse Beach, the Formosa Wetlands Walkway is a must for bird lovers. It gives access to the Alcoa Birding Tower and is only a two-minute drive or ten-minute walk from the lighthouse.

The long, wooden boardwalk over the water is ideal for viewing some of the famous birdlife the Texas Gulf Coast is known for, including seaside sparrows, pelicans, and various gulls. The Alcoa Birding Tower is also an incredible spot to watch the skyline during sunrise and sunset.
