History and Cultural Significance

The history of Tres Palacios Bay is deeply intertwined with the town of Palacios.

During World War II, the region was home to Camp Hulen, an anti-aircraft artillery training facility run by the Texas National Guard. This brought a large military population to Palacios, causing the town to rapidly expand. Camp Hulen became famous for hosting USO shows, attracting stars like Rita Hayworth and other celebrities to perform for the troops.

Historically known as Camp Palacios, this town was established in the early 1900s and became a significant military hub during World War II. Today, the city retains much of its small-town charm, with a population that embraces its historical significance while looking toward a bright future in tourism.

Palacios also has a diverse cultural landscape, with a significant Vietnamese immigrant community adding to the local fishing industry. Visitors can experience the town’s maritime history through its central waterfront and its connection to the region’s shrimping industry. The town’s Pleasure Pavilion and numerous buildings from the early 20th century are reminders of its vibrant history.
